Training of Correctional Staff

An essential component of our mental and behavior health program is the training of all correctional staff. It is critical that the front line Correctional Officers who deal with mentally ill detainees on a daily basis are trained and equipped to play an integral role in their management to achieve optimal success.

CONMED's comprehensive, ongoing training program has gained acceptance throughout the country and has been approved by many state commissions for up to four hours of in-service credit. Our program can be tailored to meet the needs of the Facility Administration.

Suicide Risk Identification and Reduction Program

CONMED recognizes the importance of an integrated approach to mental and behavioral healthcare that includes, at its core, a solid suicide risk identification, management and reduction program. We believe that both the risk and prevalence of suicide can be significantly reduced through proper screening, training, management, follow-up and treatment. We employ a "zero tolerance" policy when it comes to suicidal threats/gestures – all threats and behaviors are taken seriously and acted upon promptly. CONMED’s mental and behavioral mental health staff is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to psychiatric emergencies.

Telepsychiatry

Cutting-edge technology enables CONMED to provide services via telepsychiatry at times and in geographic areas where there is limited availability of psychiatrists and licensed professionals. This also allows us to provide consistent and cost-effective mental and behavioral health services when unexpected events occur, regardless of the time or location of need.

Electronic Medical Records

We have broad experience in implementing and integrating an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system that is tailored to meet the specific needs of the correctional facility. Our Transition Team trains our medical staff and corrections administration on the system and works with the Facility Administration on all aspects of implementation – up to and including going “live.”

Quality Compliance and Audit Oversight

As part of our Continuous Quality Improvement program, the Quality Assurance and Standards team conducts compliance assessments and pre-audit surveys to determine compliance levels with the standards of the American Correctional Association (ACA), the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), and numerous state commissions on correctional standards, as well as ensuring compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

We have an unsurpassed audit record. Since the Company’s inception in 1984, we have passed every audit. Further, no CONMED-contracted facility has ever lost its accreditation.

Medical Services

Utilization Management / Utilization Review Support

To monitor and contain costs when it is medically necessary to hospitalize an inmate, we provide a Utilization Management / Utilization Review service that will handle pre-approvals, case management, and discharge planning, as well as processing of all hospital and specialty practitioner invoices. Our Utilization Review determines the appropriateness of each off-premises emergency department or hospital case.
